Gillnets are a huge threat for the oceans, and the only threat to the vaquita (Phocoena sinus). At the Upper Gulf of California home of the vaquita, there is a permanent gillnet ban, that is why finding an alternative fishing gear is vital for the survival of local communities and species that live there.
In September 2017 two of the fishermen from San Felipe at the UGC traveled to Scandinavia where they meet with other fishermen that have developed alternative gear that has no bycatch. Here in association with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) the San Felipe fishermen got to see how the Scandinavian fishermen designed and used the gear.
With all this new ideas, they took the pot design and adapted it for San Felipe creating a new design that is a collection of experiences between México and Scandinavia. The pots went in to construction and got ready to try them.
